How Overtime Pay Is Calculated
Worked example: $25/hour, 40 regular hours/week, 5 overtime hours/week, 1.5x multiplier — regular weekly pay $1,000.00 + weekly overtime pay $187.50 (($25 x 1.5) x 5) = $1,187.50 total weekly gross, or $61,750.00/year at 52 weeks.
The overtime hourly rate is your hourly rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier — for example, $25 x 1.5 = $37.50/hour.
Total weekly gross pay is annualized by multiplying by weeks per year — regular and overtime pay are each scaled the same way.
Regular and overtime pay are kept separate on purpose, so you can see exactly how
much of your total gross pay comes from overtime versus your base rate. See the Hourly to Yearly Salary Calculator for the full
annual breakdown, or the Hourly to Weekly Salary Calculator for a
weekly-only view without overtime.
Multiply your hourly rate by your overtime multiplier to get the overtime hourly rate, then multiply that by your overtime hours. At $25/hour, 1.5x, and 5 overtime hours: $25 x 1.5 x 5 = $187.50 in weekly overtime pay.
How is the overtime hourly rate calculated?
Overtime hourly rate = hourly rate x overtime multiplier. At $25/hour and 1.5x, the overtime hourly rate is $37.50.
How do overtime hours affect annual gross salary?
Weekly overtime pay is multiplied by weeks per year and added to regular annual pay, so more overtime hours or more weeks worked both increase annual gross salary proportionally.
Can I change the overtime multiplier?
Yes. Enter the multiplier that applies to your calculation, such as 1.5x or 2x, or any other value — this calculator doesn't set or determine which multiplier applies to your situation.
What formula does this calculator use?
Total weekly gross = (hourly rate x regular hours) + (hourly rate x overtime multiplier x overtime hours)
Are these results gross or net values?
Primary conversion outputs are gross unless the mode explicitly includes tax or deduction assumptions for estimated net values.
